World Economy and Development Financing

The deparment ‘World Economy and Development Financing’ of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) is working on the global economic conditions for sustainable development, as well as the transformation of international institutions and regimes of global economic governance. The research in the areas of global trade, monetary policy, financial markets, and international investments focuses on the tensions between national development policies and global rule setting. The rising importance of emerging countries continues to challenge the conventional balance of power, which has sweeping consequences for global economic governance and for developing countries. The growing interconnectedness of the world economy leads to growing challenges for a compatibility of the multiple goals of stability, growth, equality, and sustainability. The team's research deals with international institutions and instruments for the financing of sustainable development, and with national financial systems in developing countries. The growing differentiation of financial systems in developing countries, as well as the growing variety of international finance sources, increases the complexity and need for regulation on a national and international level
