This blog column provides a critical assessment of the EU’s first steps to respond to the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. It analyses three policy proposals published by the EU on 22 November 2016, namely the ‘European Action for Sustainability’, the ‘Proposal for a new European Consensus on Development’ and the Communication on a ‘Renewed Partnership with Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries’. It concludes that without presented a clear and ambitious vision as to where and how Europe should reform its policies to reduce the European footprint on global development, it is unlikely that Europe can engage in a meaningful dialogue with China, India or the African Union on the 2030 Agenda.
