A unique court case in the Netherlands: environment organisation Urgenda started a court case against the state of the Netherlands for recognizing the threat of climate change, but not adequately acting on it. Urgenda demands a 40 % reduction of CO2eq emissions by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. In this opinion article, Pieter Pauw argues that it is sad but necessary to take this step. Whilst the Netherlands has invested a lot in adaptation to climate change, this court case might be the remedy to initiate more progressive action by the Netherlands in reducing their emissions.
