Schlagworte wie „Social Innovations“, „Pro-Poor Innovations“ oder „Bottom of the Pyramid Innovations“ gewinnen im internationalen Diskurs sowohl innerhalb der Privatwirtschaft als auch im Geberumfeld zunehmend an Bedeutung. Im Rahmen des Arbeitskreises Innovationssystemförderung beschäftigen sich die deutschen Durchführungsorganisationen seit 2008 mit der Förderung von Innovationssystemen. Im Workshop wurde u.a. die Frage diskutiert, wie Pro-Poor Innovation Systems gestärkt werden können. 

Anhand des Beispiels von ländlicher Energieversorgung und dem Einsatz von neuen Biomassetechnologien wurde das Thema „Innovationen zur Armutsbekämpfung“ gemeinsam mit Vertretern aus der Privatwirtschaft, der Entwicklungspraxis und der Wissenschaft diskutiert.
