As part of the research project “Development Policy: Questions for the Future”, the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) held a workshop on “The Future of African Development” on September 17 on the premises of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Bonn. The purpose of the workshop was to present and discuss preliminary versions of chapters in an edited volume that explores how the African development landscape could change toward 2030 and assesses the implications of this changing external environment for European donors. The presentations highlighted the potential transformative effects of a small number of ‘drivers of change’ in the African context. The drivers examined include global governance processes, new actors in international development, demography, technology, climate change, and internal political change.
