Department "Bi- and Multilateral Development Cooperation"

The "Bi- and Multilateral Development Cooperation" department`s research relates to two main aspects of development policy: the goals, concepts, instruments and modalities as well as the architecture of bilateral and multilateral development cooperation. The common focus is on the challenges resulting from the need to enhance the effectiveness of development policy. This need has spurred the international community to pursue far-reaching reforms labelled as the aid effectiveness agenda. Aid effectiveness is at the core of the legitimacy of development policy.
One of the department's project deals with the reform of the United Nations' development cooperation. European policy for global development is also of increasing interest. Improving coherence and coordination within this policy-framework are issues of particular concern. Research is being conducted on trade and security-related aspects of EU development policy as well as the impact of emerging actors (namely China) on Africa and the EU’s development cooperation. A further project assesses the prospects and requirements for modalities in development cooperation, such as budget financing.
