The Department "Governance, Statehood, Security" focuses on the analysis of political transformation and stability of different political orders and on the capacity of states to fulfil public functions. We examine governance and conflict patterns related to these issues and embed our analyses in the broader international context.
Our core competence consists in empirical analysis from a political economy perspective, which is theory-driven and methodological sound. Our in-depth expertise on different regions allows us to move beyond country or region-specific analysis towards interregional comparisons. Our tacit knowledge about the fields of development assistance and foreign policy enables us to promote communication between researchers and practitioners as well as to deliver research based advice for policy-makers.
