United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik / German Development Institute (DIE)

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik / German Development Institute (DIE) have jointly initiated the publication of a report on Green Industrial Policy, with contributions from other PAGE (Partnership for Action on Green Economy) partners. The report – targeted at development researchers, policymakers and practitioners – will provide an up-to-date overview of the debate on Green Industrial Policy in development. It shows why transitioning to a green economy is urgent. Decarbonization is highlighted as the most immediate and pressing challenge, but the need to manage economies within planetary boundaries is also explicitly acknowledged. Economic growth thus needs to be decoupled from resource consumption more broadly. Learning lessons from industrial policy implementation in the past can provide important guidance for the transition to a green economy. Given the interdisciplinarity of the challenge, this publication will bring together perspectives from leading experts on environmental economics, systems transition research and industrial policy, thereby creating new insights from the combination of different bodies of knowledge.
