Information

This chapter demonstrates the relationship between Syrian middle-class professionals, regime cronies and their changing consumer preferences, and the process of gentrification. It argues that the production of gentrification in the Syrian capital of Damascus followed the logics of the market but also depended on an authoritarian state that used gentrification in order to secure its power at the local scale.
