How can quantifying ecosystem services inform public policy? In this paper we quantify forest ecosystem services in two watersheds of the Peruvian Amazon to assess changes in land cover and the provision of forest ecosystem services (water sediment retention and purification, and carbon sequestration) in three scenarios to 2023. We draw from the case studies to evaluate the limits and uses of the ecosystem services approach, as well as to propose ways in which such an approach may be scaled up and used in national level.
