Cities account for 75 per cent of global carbon emissions. Achieving global emission goals therefore requires city leadership. However, successful decarbonisation can only be sustainable if it is socially just. The necessary transformation has to go beyond technical solutions and requires holistic approaches and buy-in from diverse stakeholders and citizens. To facilitate these approaches in a highly urbanised region - Latin America - new models of urban coalition building and urban governance are necessary. This project will support building such coalitions by implementing catalyst projects in five Urban Labs in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Transformative research, capacity building activities and tailored communication strategies will facilitate this process. The project will also use film and art to inspire new narratives of attractive and sustainable urban futures. The emerging models of urban coalitions and governance will be analysed and replicated in other cities and countries and will ultimately be fed into international discussions about urban sustainability transformations.
