The German Development Institute (DIE) is one of the leading international development policy think tanks. Through excellent research, policy advice and training, it contributes to finding answers to global questions about the future.

The research programme "Inter- and Transnational Cooperation" is looking to recruit a Head of Academy (project lead) for our BMZ African-German Leadership Academy as soon as possible, initially for a fixed term until 31.12.2021 (with the prospect of extension).

The African-German Leadership Academy is a new international, English-language training and dialogue format to be developed. Its components include digital formats and a three months’ face-to-face interaction in both Bonn and Berlin. It is aimed at emerging leaders from African countries that are BMZ reform partners. The programme is the basis for broad, research-based collaboration with African countries on supporting skills and innovation for sustainable development, based on the Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda. At DIE the Leadership Academy is embedded in a research programme that works on issues of global knowledge cooperation. It will explore potential for cooperation and synergies with other training programmes at DIE, in particular the Managing Global Governance (MGG) and DIE's postgraduate programme.


The Head of the Academy is responsible for the following tasks, among others:

  • Setting up and managing the programme (as project lead) with participants and partner institutions from African countries in a newly established team at DIE.
  • Developing a curriculum in partnership with African and European actors and developing the didactics in a peer learning format, as well as conception and implementation of interactive courses, also in digital formats.
  • Networking with and integration of external lecturers for the special needs of international group of participants from diverse professional backgrounds (science, government, society, business).
  • Selection and supervision of participants in close coordination with and partly under the guidance of other academic and non-academic staff in the DIE team.
  • Preparation and follow-up of third-party funding applications.
  • Scientific processing of questions on different dimensions of sustainability (economic, ecological, social, political) in African countries and/or didactics for the target group.
  • Engagement in teaching and policy dialogues in Germany, Europe and Africa.


Requirements and qualifications:

  • University degree at PhD level with excellent grades in political science, social science, economics or related disciplines,
  • Fluency in English, very good command of German is desirable; French is an asset,
  • Knowledge of sustainability and development policy debate in relation to Africa, not least Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030; in-depth knowledge of didactics for transnational peer learning and dialogue is particularly desirable,
  • Experience with African countries, especially West and North Africa, is desirable.
  • Willingness and aptness to travel abroad, including countries with a tropical climate (Tropentauglichkeit)
  • Experience in the management of larger third-party funded projects as well as in the leadership of professionally and culturally diverse teams.
