German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation – exceed

How should development cooperation look like in the future? Sustainable development is increasingly recognised as a global, multi-sectoral endeavour and involves a growing variety of actors and approaches. An ambivalent history of success, new forms of cooperation and the need for transformation also in developed countries challenge conventional development cooperation on various fronts. Critics from civil society and academia raise further concerns, reaching from more specific issues of partnership relations to the fundamental critique in the Post-Development debate, which problematizes development cooperation as ‘anti-politics machine’ that conceals and perpetuates power relations and conflicts.

New understandings of the role of development cooperation are still in the making. Research and higher education institutions have an important part to play in this. Their dialogue across countries, disciplines and with actors of development cooperation is essential.

German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the DAAD-funded program Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation – exceed were jointly convening this evening event on “Rethinking Development Cooperation”. A keynote speech and a debate among researchers, policy makers and practitioners from developing as well as developed countries discussed key features of the future of development cooperation.
