Green and social in the Post-2015 agenda
German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Poverty Reduction, Equity and Growth Network (PEGNet)
In September 2013, the United Nations decided to only have “one single framework and set of goals” for international development after 2015. A single framework means that the ambitions for human development and the environment of the Millennium and the Sustainable Development Goals need to be integrated in order to achieve a coherent post-2015 agenda – a challenging task, as these two dimensions are interdependent. While the discourse on the Millennium Development Goals focused mainly on synergies (e.g., education for all having positive impacts on other goals, such as poverty reduction or health), the discussion evolving around the post-2015 agenda also includes possible trade-offs (e.g., social goals such as poverty reduction, and ecological goals such as climate stability). Such trade-offs may present stumbling blocks that prevent progress in both human development and environmental protection. It is therefore essential that the international community discusses early on how possible trade-offs will be taken care of in the design of the post-2015 agenda. The overall aim should be to elaborate smart solutions that allow for as much progress as possible towards all goals during the implementation phase.
To this end, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the Poverty Reduction, Equity and Growth Network (PEGNet) organised a policy dialogue workshop with selected participants from developing and developed countries as well as international and civil society organisations.
