This year's third and last Managing Global Governance (MGG) Public Lecture was held by YE Jiang, Director of the Institute for Global Governance Studies and the Centre for European Studies at the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). He is a widely published expert on globalization, China’s role in global governance and China-EU relations.

YE Jiang’s lecture focused on China’s increasing importance as a new agent in global governance. While it is quite obvious that China’s political and economic influence have become global, it is less obvious in what ways the country is going to embrace and actively support existing global governance norms and institutions.

How can China contribute to strengthening institutional structures for global governance? What does the rise of China mean with regard to existing global governance institutions, and how can the latter be adapted to new global realities? What role may China play in international cooperation for global development? These are some of the issues that YE Jiang discussed with the audience, as well as with Christine Hackenesch, Researcher in the "Bi- and Multilateral Development Cooperation" Department at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), and Regine Mehl, Senior Researcher in the DIE Training Department.

YE Jiang’s lecture was part of the MGG Public Lecture series featuring eminent scholars as well as high-ranking officials from MGG partner institutions. The MGG programme, which goes on to the 10th round in 2012, engages highly qualified young professionals from eight emerging economies (Egypt, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan and South Africa) in a global governance dialogue. The programme starts off with a two-month academic module, the Global Governance School (GGS). Subsequently, participants move on to research-based practice projects at German or European host organisations. MGG is jointly implemented by DIE and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ).
