As part of the EADI/DSA General Conference on “Rethinking Development in an Age of Scarcity and Uncertainty” (19-22 September 2011, York, UK) the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) will organise a panel on “The impact of Southern donors on the global aid architecture". This panel is part of the EADI working group “Development Aid of the Non-DAC Donors”.

This panel discusses to what extent the rise of Southern donors poses a challenge to the standards developed in the context of the DAC – as often claimed by Western donor representatives. Against the background of this overall focus, the panel will contribute to a better understanding what South-South development cooperation actually is and where it differs from traditional donors’ approaches. Furthermore, panellists will explore possibilities for institutionalised cooperation between Southern and Western donors to the benefit of least developed countries. Innovative instruments in this respect potentially are trilateral cooperation projects that bring together traditional and emerging donors for the benefit of a third developing country.
