This paper investigates how European policymakers have negotiated the relation between EU borders and African mobility 1999-2019. It focuses on how negotiations on migration policies and narrative frames have been interlinked. It does so based on policy analysis and interviews with policymakers.

We conducted a randomized control trial in order to assess the impacts of the Tingathe Economic Empowerment Project in Malawi. We find in particular that poor and labour-constrained households benefited from the project and that the provided training increased the productive use of the lump-sum.

What kinds of transnational networks are beneficial for civil society engagement in regional governance? Using social network analysis, we investigate civil society’s role in ending early marriage and improving worker’s rights in southern Africa.
This case study examines how Malaysia – a country that has not signed the UN Convention for the Protection of Refugees – continues to host multiple waves of refugees. It examines policy measures and their impact on the protection environment with key recommendations for the enhancement of it.

How can we assess impact in governance programs? This publication presents lessons learnt on how to conduct impact-oriented accompanying research succesfully. The focus is on governance interventions but the lessons can also be applied to other development interventions.
To be effective, democracy support faces the challenge of taking the cultural context of partner countries into account. This discussion paper investigates how values and attitudes in Malawi influenced the effectiveness of democracy support in the reform of its term limit and its family law.
What role do cultural values play in democracy support? Western donors promote liberal values in recipient countries as part of their governance programmes, but these may clash with local values and attitudes. We explore how (mis)matching values mediate the effectiveness of democracy support.
This paper identifies promising export sectors for Egypt and Tunisia using a variant of the Product Space approach. Results indicate sectors as close as possible to the countries’ current level of productive capabilities with some degree of complexity and ability for average-quality job retention.
