The workshop “Managing Regional and Global Governance (MRGG) in Asia: Opportunities and Challenges for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)“ is being jointly developed and implemented by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Bank Indonesia and DEFINIT. The workshop will take place from 3 to 14 October 2011 in Indonesia.

The MRGG format reaches out to future leaders from Asia to facilitate a better understanding of the interface between regional and global challenges and to interact with partners from Germany/Europe and other MGG regions. The most important aims of the workshop are the analysis of regional governance processes and the development of new approaches to meeting future challenges faced by ASEAN+3 (ASEAN plus China, Japan, and Korea) in the context of a global environment which is changing rapidly. The processes within ASEAN+3 cannot be understood and managed without considering the complex and diverse connections with processes, systems and actors in the global arena.

Against this background the workshop will discuss the extension of ASEAN to ASEAN+3 and the envisaged integration of ASEAN into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The formation of the AEC is intended to transform ASEAN into a single market and highly competitive production base that guarantees equitable economic development and is fully integrated into the global economy.

The target group of the workshop will include future leaders from government institutions and regional organizations as well as universities and think tanks from ASEAN+3 countries.

The pioneering MRGG workshop is an innovative part of the Training and Dialogue programme Managing Global Governance (MGG), an initiative of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented jointly since 2007 by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and GIZ. Subsequent regional workshops are intended to take place in other regions as well in the future. The overarching MGG programme is aimed at highly qualified young professionals from currently eight rising powers (Indonesia, Egypt, China, India, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa), who work in government bodies, policy-oriented think tanks and research institutions. By offering a qualification for young researchers and government employees the programme intends to strengthen partner countries’ capacities in shaping globalisation processes as well as supporting them with the implementation of national reform policies to cope with global challenges, such as poverty and climate change. At the same time the programme wants to encourage high-level dialogue and networking between Germany/Europe and the participating countries. The aim is to establish effective, strategic partnerships on equal terms in order to identify possible collective approaches in finding solutions for global challenges.
