For many years, IDOS has been strategically engaged in helping to establish and develop the think tank processes of the G20 and the G7. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and attempts to grapple with its causes and consequences have laid bare the deep cracks in the global governance architecture. These fissures are becoming particularly apparent within the G20 itself, a group that was established at the level of heads of state and government during the global financial crisis. At that time, almost 15 years ago, the G7 had come to be seen as neither sufficiently effective nor inclusive, something it had repeatedly sought to remedy in previous years by inviting guest countries to its meetings. During 2022, the German G7 Presidency sent an important signal by inviting G20 states India, Indonesia, South Africa and Argentina, and Senegal as this year’s chair of the African Union, to the G7 summit. In this context, IDOS is helping to shape the ongoing debate as to how links between the G7 and the G20 process can be fortified with a view to also stepping up cross-border cooperation beyond the G7.
