The BMZ African-German Leadership Academy is an innovative training and dialogue programme bringing together young professionals from Germany and its reform partner countries Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia as well as Togo. The programme aims to develop leadership skills and enable joint knowledge creation and peer learning needed for sustainable development, in accordance with the objectives of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development between the partners involved. The programme is organised and hosted by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
During the programme, the participants, 26 young professionals from government institutions, think tanks and research institutions, civil society and private sector, bring together their experience of and expertise in working in the area of sustainable development. The programme also enables networking opportunities with German and European stakeholders from various sectors and with representatives from African institutions. In 2021, the programme took place as shortened pilot in a full-time digital programme between 26 April and 7 May. A longer in-person version of the BMZ African-German Leadership Academy spanning three months is planned from 2022 onwards.
