In this discussion paper, we provide a critical assessment of the role the Compact with Africa launched under the German Presidency of the G20 in 2017 could play for African development. We argue that the Compact has the potential to benefit the continent but only after major adjustments.
The paper analyzes coordination in the United Nation’s development system: How well do the UN’s on average 18 entities per country work together? What impedes a better coordination? The paper concludes that the UN’s weaknesses are also attributable to how member states chose to deal with the UN.

To “make standards work” for SMEs and sustainable development, the challenges and incentives for take-up of sustainability standards need to be better understood. The paper analyses five country case studies to identify drivers and constraints for standard adoption by SMEs and to derive policy advice.
Germany’s annual aid to MENA countries more than doubled since 2011, but without a public strategy setting out objectives and the role of aid and other policy tools in achieving them. A whole of government strategy based on the 2030 Agenda could balance German interests with the MENA’s development priorities.
This discussion paper illustrates how different forms of blockchain technology work. It discusses specific risks and potentials of the technology to offer financially underserved people access to basic financial services. A focus area is (international) payments.
