World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought - Let's plant forests for the future
German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), "Let's plant" Association
The 17th of June reminds us that the combat of desertification and drought is a global challenge. This is never more true than today, when it is increasingly becoming evident that loss of biodiversity, climate change, soil degradation, drought and water stress as well as poverty and food insecurity in rural areas are not only local phenomena. Through various global mechanisms, such as the athmosphere, agricultural trade and migration, they are all linked and affect all of us. On the other hand, there is hardly any countermeasure as multi-dimensional, versatile and effective as rehabilitation and restoration of landscapes including through afforestation and sustainable agricultural systems.
The event aims to show the intertwined nature of drought and natural resource degradation. We show two half hour films which illustrate the problems and provide examples of (partial) solutions. The film director, Patrick Augenstein, who has an outstanding academic and cinematographic track record on the topics and has worked with and for many national and international organisations and media, will be present and is ready to discuss with the audience about the topics and - if wanted - about the making of the films. Also researchers and activists from the two inviting organisations, German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the recently founded association "Let's plant", will be available for discussion.
