Climate change is real, and it is increasingly affecting people in developing and emerging countries. Fears have been mounting in the Global North that climate change could produce millions of ‘climate refugees’ fleeing to Europe or North America. However, social science research on the effects of global warming on human mobility suggests that migration is neither an inevitable nor a critical consequence per se of climate change. Instead, migration can also be a useful adaptation strategy.
