The subject of world peace is once again about to take the centre-stage of political theatre. Although the major countries’ heads of state and government are not yet holding peace summits, amidst the G20 countries, war and conflicts such as those in Syria and Ukraine increasingly push themselves onto conference agendas. World order seems to be in a more fragile state than ever seemed conceivable just a few years ago. Barely three decades after the end of the Cold War, it is clearer by the day that probably the most peaceful period in human history might have come to an end – unless some worrying trends are reversed quite soon.
